At Dialect, we believe language is a cultural treasure that should be shared freely — but your personal data must remain private. We are committed to handling your information with full transparency.

1. Data We Collect

We only collect information strictly necessary to run the app and sync your progress:

  • Account: Your name (or username), email address, and encrypted password.
  • Third-party authentication (Apple / Google): If you choose to sign in with Sign in with Apple or Google Sign-In, we receive a unique identifier, your email address (or a private relay alias for Apple) and optionally your public name. No password is transmitted to Dialect.
  • Learning progress: Words learned, review frequency, session history, and quiz scores.
  • Preferences: Your chosen target language (Kabyle, Darija, etc.).

2. How We Use Your Data

Your information is used exclusively to:

  • Manage your account and secure access to your data.
  • Sync your progress across all your devices (iOS, Web, etc.).
  • Calculate your next review dates using the SM-2 spaced repetition algorithm.
  • Generate anonymous statistics to improve lesson effectiveness.

3. Hosting & Security

All your data is hosted via Google Firebase (servers located in the EU). We use advanced security protocols to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of your data. We never sell, share, or rent your data to advertisers.

4. Third-Party Providers

Dialect relies on the following services for authentication and app functionality:

These providers may collect their own data during sign-in, in accordance with their respective policies. Dialect only receives the information strictly necessary to identify your account.

5. Your Rights (GDPR)

In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation, you have full control over your information:

  • Right to access and correction.
  • Right to data portability.
  • Right to erasure: You can delete your account and all associated data instantly from the "Profile" tab in the app.

6. California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) grants you additional rights regarding your personal information:

  • Right to know: You may request details about the categories and specific pieces of personal information we collect, use, and disclose.
  • Right to delete: You may request deletion of your personal information at any time (also available instantly from the "Profile" tab).
  • Right to correct: You may request correction of inaccurate personal information.
  • Right to opt out of sale or sharing: We do not sell or share your personal information with third parties for monetary or other valuable consideration, nor for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • Right to non-discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights.

7. Children's Privacy

Dialect is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes within the app or by email. Continued use after notification constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
