Spaced repetition: the science that makes language learning 3× more efficient
If a single learning technique had to be kept for memorizing language vocabulary in the long term, it would be spaced repetition. This is called the forgetting curve. It explains why, after an intense session learning 50 words, you only find 10 or 15 the day after tomorrow. The brain simply isn't built to retain long-term what it has seen only once.
The fix: spaced repetition
The major discovery from Ebbinghaus's curve is that each recall extends the forgetting interval. If you review a word right before forgetting it, the memory trace is consolidated, and next time you can wait longer before reviewing it. Schematically:
