Rifian (Tarifit) turns the l of other Amazigh languages into a Rif r, written ř by linguists: ul (heart) becomes uř. It is the giveaway that identifies a Rifian speaker within a sentence — except in the far east, where the shift never happened.

Learning Rifian: the essentials
Neither Duolingo, nor Babbel, nor Memrise offers a Rifian course. It exists on uTalk, which teaches vocabulary and phrases rather than a structured course, and through a handful of private tutors — the offering stays thin. INALCO does not teach it either: its brochure lists only Tuareg, Tachelhit and Kabyle. As for the reference dictionary, Mohamed Serhoual's thesis, it has never been published. Dialect covers Rifian with 293 words and phrases and 293 audio files in a native speaker's voice, grouped by theme and reviewed with spaced repetition.
